Lately

I haven’t been so great at keeping up with blogging lately. Life has been incredibly hectic, what with APs and SATs swiftly approaching, increasingly frequent rehearsals for a show I’m in, and lots of events with friends, but I couldn’t be happier. The world is coming back to life: every day there’s a little more green, and the sun doesn’t set until almost seven thirty. Excuse the cliche metaphor, but I feel as if I’m on a roller coaster that’s only going up.

I’ll try to post more real content within the coming week, but for now, enjoy these snapshots of my weekend.

Have you ever been friends with someone for a while, stopped talking to them for years, and reconnected only to become best friends with them? That's what happened with me and Brandon. We "dated" in middle school, and now at the end of junior year we started talking again and realized how wonderfully alike we are in personality. He loves BMX biking, so we had a really fun shoot yesterday by an abandoned bridge.

Oh, and I got my braces off about a week and a half ago. With all the smiling I've been doing lately, I don't think the timing could have been more perfect.

As always, there’s more to see on my Flickr! Stay tuned; posts may continue to be sparse, but I’ll try to make them good. I hope you’re all enjoying your lives as much as I have been lately.

Blog Love

I used to follow a heck of a lot of blogs. As much as I loved them, it always seemed like I was drowning in unread posts, half of which on topics I didn’t feel like reading about. Hundreds of DIYs that I would never do and fashion inspiration I would never emulate piled up on my reading list until I finally pulled the plug and stopped reading blogs altogether. I was sick of DIYs, sick of recipes, sick of fashion, sick of feeling tied to my computer scrolling through a long list of blogs that all seemed to be run by the same kind of person. Since then, I’ve began to build up a list of blogs I always enjoy reading — and don’t feel obligated to check on a daily basis. I thought I’d share a few with you!

My Happy Place // Coconut Peach Muffins with Oat Crumb

I’ve recently discovered a blog called My Happy Place. It is a happy place–full of beautifully lit photography and a great mix of healthy and indulgent recipes. I was surprised to find that it’s run by a home-schooled 15-year-old from South Africa! Her quirky personality and realistic approach to a balanced lifestyle is refreshing, and it’s inspiring to see someone even younger than me receiving so much attention.

Another great (recent) find of mine is Into Mind, a blog centered on a minimalist’s approach to beauty. I mentioned it in my post on minimalism a while back, and it’s proved to be a useful resource since then!¬†Anuschka’s posts on capsule wardrobes and closet detoxes are timeless, and I’ve been reading over them often lately in the hopes of revamping my own style.

Of course, I can’t go without mentioning A Beautiful Mess, the blog that made me want to blog in the first place! Emma and Elsie are multi-talented, hardworking and incredibly inspirational–if you’re even remotely into fashion, photography, blogging, DIY, food, vintage, design, or beauty and you haven’t heard of them, you probably live under a rock. They churn out amazing content every day, and it’s always fun to check up on the blog and get inspired to make my home and life a little more beautiful. They clearly make the most of life, and even though their lives are very different from mine, their happiness and determination consistently drives me to follow my own dreams.

I read a wide variety of blogs, from food blogs to fashion blogs to general lifestyle blogs, but some that really stand out to me are run by people my own age, such as Sam Loves Makeup and Happy Little Somethings. I highly suggest giving any and all of the blogs I’ve mentioned a look!

Review: Birchbox

P1110259For a while the entire blogging world went crazy over these monthly gift box subscriptions. Beauty products, jewelry, makeup, and the like… if you could dream it up, there’s some sort of monthly subscription out there for it. I decided to hop on the bandwagon (late, as usual) and see if Birchbox, which provides samples of beauty products from lotions to nail decals to eye makeup and beyond, was any good!

P1110260

The first month’s box was slightly disappointing, as they sent me mostly hair accessories and nail products (neither of which I would ever really use). But I kept my hopes high, and I enjoyed this month’s box significantly more! I have yet to use the hair product in the pink bottle (Beauty Protector), but I really enjoy all of the other products so far!

One thing I loved about this box was the “lifestyle extra,” raw vegan gluten-free chocolate macaroons. They’re not pictured here because I gobbled them up right away! Chocolate truffles made of all natural, healthy ingredients? Sign me up. My aunt is vegan, so I’ll definitely be looking into that company to buy her a gift in the future!

P1110267I don’t know how long I’ll keep up my subscription, but for $10 a month, I think this a great way to expose myself to new beauty products and change up my routine for the better. Has anyone else tried monthly subscription boxes such as Birchbox? What did you think?
