Currently Coveting: Music Edition

Music is such a huge part of my life, I’m shocked that I’ve never really spoken about it on this blog! I couldn’t imagine my life without music. There isn’t a moment when a track or rhythm isn’t playing in my head. I listen to pretty much everything (except country) and the more I learn about music theory, the more I love music. I thought I would share a few artists/albums, both new and old, that I’ve been really adoring lately.

amAM by The Arctic Monkeys  — this album was released a few days ago and I can’t get enough of it. Seriously, just go check it out. I’ve linked a youtube video of the entire album.

the wild youthAll of Daughter‘s music – amazing vibes. She’s been around for a while but I recently came across her music and I absolutely adore it. A lot of it is mellow and sad, but it’s truly chilling and beautifully orchestrated. Her lyrics are incredibly honest and raw.

explosions in the sky

Explosions In The Sky – I absolutely adore instrumentals, and this band has six whole albums of them. Their songs and quite long and the music is written in a narrative style, without lyrics. I think I could listen to them forever. My current favorite song of theirs is Your Hand In Mine.

I love being introduced to new music, so tell me your favorite song or artist and I’ll give it a listen!

Review: Party Proof Lipstick by ModelCo Cosmetics

In my most recent Birchbox package, I received a striking red lipstick: ModelCo’s PARTY PROOF lipstick in matte Red Velvet. As soon as I put it on, I knew I had to review it, because I’ve never seen its equal!

P1120074I actually went to a party the other night, so I gave this lipstick a test run. It definitely passed! The color lasted all night, and I put it on at 3:30 in the afternoon. It faded a bit but I didn’t ever have to reapply, and my lips felt more soft and moisturized than if I had just worn a simple lip balm.

The ModelCo website boasts it as “kiss proof, drink proof, and party proof,” and I’d have to agree with all of that. The only thing I have to say is that it is highly pigmented, so although the color lasts on your lips, it does end up on other things, like napkins and straws and people’s necks. (Oops.) It stops rubbing off after a while, but that’s something to watch out for and pretty much the only drawback I can think of.

The lipstick is $16.95 from the ModelCo website and comes in 24 colors, or $24.00 for a trio of lipsticks from the Birchbox website and comes in 2 color palettes. The Birchbox sample I received is supposedly smaller than the full lipstick, but it seems like a normal size to me, and I’m sure it’ll last me a while even though red lipstick is a staple I wear almost every day.

Review: Birchbox

P1110259For a while the entire blogging world went crazy over these monthly gift box subscriptions. Beauty products, jewelry, makeup, and the like… if you could dream it up, there’s some sort of monthly subscription out there for it. I decided to hop on the bandwagon (late, as usual) and see if Birchbox, which provides samples of beauty products from lotions to nail decals to eye makeup and beyond, was any good!

The first month’s box was slightly disappointing, as they sent me mostly hair accessories and nail products (neither of which I would ever really use). But I kept my hopes high, and I enjoyed this month’s box significantly more! I have yet to use the hair product in the pink bottle (Beauty Protector), but I really enjoy all of the other products so far!

One thing I loved about this box was the “lifestyle extra,” raw vegan gluten-free chocolate macaroons. They’re not pictured here because I gobbled them up right away! Chocolate truffles made of all natural, healthy ingredients? Sign me up. My aunt is vegan, so I’ll definitely be looking into that company to buy her a gift in the future!

P1110267I don’t know how long I’ll keep up my subscription, but for $10 a month, I think this a great way to expose myself to new beauty products and change up my routine for the better. Has anyone else tried monthly subscription boxes such as Birchbox? What did you think?

Favorites: beauty products

P1100901With opening night of the musical this coming weekend, I really don’t have much time for blogging, so I’ve set up some posts in advance! I thought I might share a few of my favorite beauty/self-care products and why I love them so much.

The first would be my Pond’s cold cream. I’m fairly certain that I stole this from my mom a while ago because she never uses it and I do. I have combination dry and oily skin, and this cold cream moisturizes and cleans without leaving me feeling greasy. It’s wonderful! Once a week or so I wash my face, pat it dry, and rub globs of cold cream into my skin. I look pretty terrifying for a minute or so, and then I wipe it off with tissues and run a cool damp washcloth over my face. It makes my skin feel so soft and clean.

The next would be that little bottle of gold-ish liquid, which is Orofluido hair oil. I don’t even know what this stuff is, but I have a million little sample-sized bottles like that because it smells like heaven. Seriously. The bottle reads: “silkiness, lightness and shine. Beauty elixir for your hair.” It definitely does make hair shiny and soft when applied in even very small quantities, but mostly I put it on the tips of my hair so I can smell it all day. Is that weird? Okay.

P1100895The next few products have to do with eye makeup, which is, in my opinion, probably the most important aspect of most looks.

My mark. shimmer cream cubes are my go-to on lazy makeup days and for subtle but sparkling highlights all over my face. They are very well pigmented, portable, and easy to apply with a fingertip. The varied shades make it possible to create a whole look from one palette. I use the lightest pink as a brow-bone highlight almost every day, and the shades of gold, bronze and rose gold are wonderful lid colors alone or combined. The mirror and small size makes it perfect for travel, too.

For a long time, I struggled with imprecise liquid and gel liners with brushes that always seemed too thick or flimsy. Finally, my friend introduced me to Maybelline’s range of marker liners, and I never turned back. The master precise ink liner allows me to create anything from subtle lines to thick, bold cat eyes to intricate designs. It’s very easy to control, and I’ve never needed to use any other liner since I’ve bought this one!

And of course, I can’t go without mentioning my Urban Decay eye primer, which came with my beloved NAKED palette. As mentioned in my previous post about the palette, this primer allows me to go all day without my makeup fading or creasing. That stuff absolutely stays put until you take it off with makeup remover. I have a lot of shadows which aren’t as good quality and tend to go on thinly, resulting in a faded version of the true color. With this primer, the shadow clings to my lid and looks just like it does in the compact. I highly recommend it!

In addition to these specific products, one of my staples is red lipstick. Red is not only my favorite color, but the color that looks best with my skin and hair. When you walk into a room wearing red lipstick, people notice you. It’s so timeless and glamorous, and it goes with almost every look. What’s not to love?
